If you prefer to watch the basic construction before starting, this beginner-friendly video shows how to crochet a simple hair scarf in rows.

This video is a helpful visual reference for working a crochet hair scarf in rows. The written instructions below use US crochet terminology and are adapted for Ichraq Crea readers.

About This Crochet Hair Scarf

When I write a beginner crochet pattern, I try to remove the decisions that make a first project feel confusing. This scarf is intentionally simple: choose the length with the foundation chain, repeat the same tall stitch across every row, and stop when the fabric reaches the width you like.

The video uses the UK name treble stitch. In this written pattern, I use standard US crochet terms. The equivalent stitch is called double crochet (dc).

Yarn weight, hook size and personal tension can change the final measurements. I recommend making a short test section before committing to the full scarf. This small check helps you confirm the drape and width before spending time on the complete project.

Materials Needed

  • Drops Muskat yarn or a similar smooth cotton yarn
  • 4.0 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Tape measure
  • Optional: a contrasting color for the border

Cotton yarn is a good choice because it gives the scarf a clean stitch definition and a comfortable breathable finish. A cotton-linen blend can also work well. Avoid very fluffy yarn if you want the double crochet rows to remain clearly visible.

Finished Size

  • Length: approximately 90–110 cm / 35–43 in
  • Width: approximately 4–7 cm / 1.5–2.75 in
  • Rows: usually 6–10 rows

The final size depends on your yarn, hook and tension. For a shorter scarf, make a shorter foundation chain. For a fuller scarf, add more rows before fastening off.

Crochet Abbreviations — US Terms

  • ch — chain
  • dc — double crochet
  • sl st — slip stitch
  • st / sts — stitch / stitches

Terminology note: the UK treble stitch is the same stitch as the US double crochet.

Foundation Chain

Make a slip knot and place it on your hook. Chain until the foundation measures approximately 90–110 cm / 35–43 in, or until it reaches your preferred finished length.

Row 1 — Double Crochet

Work 1 double crochet into the fourth chain from the hook. Continue working 1 double crochet into each chain across.

The skipped chains count as the first double crochet. Chain 3 and turn.

Rows 2–10

Work 1 double crochet into each stitch across. Chain 3 and turn at the end of every row.

For a light hair ribbon, work approximately 6–8 rows. For a fuller scarf, work up to 10 rows.

Fasten off and leave a yarn tail of approximately 15 cm / 6 in for weaving.

Finishing

Thread the yarn tail onto a yarn needle and weave it securely through the stitches on the wrong side of the scarf. Repeat with the beginning yarn tail.

Trim the excess yarn only after both ends are secure. If the scarf looks uneven, lightly dampen it and block it flat. Do not stretch the fabric aggressively.

Optional Crochet Border

A simple single crochet border can give the scarf a cleaner finished appearance.

  1. Join your main color or contrast color at one corner.
  2. Work single crochet evenly around the two long sides and both short ends.
  3. Work 2 single crochet stitches in each corner.
  4. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.
  5. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

If the border ripples, use fewer stitches along the next side. If it pulls inward, add an extra stitch near the corners.

Optional Hidden Elastic Variation

For extra stability around a ponytail or bun, you can add a small crochet casing underneath the center of the scarf. This optional variation is not required for the basic scarf.

With matching yarn, chain 7. Work 6 single crochet stitches across the chain. Chain 1 and turn. Work 6 single crochet stitches in the back loop only for 10 rows.

Fasten off and sew the short ends together around a soft ponytail elastic. Sew only the long edges of the casing to the underside of the scarf. Do not sew through the elastic.

The elastic should remain free inside the casing so it can stretch comfortably around the base of a ponytail or bun.

How to Wear Your Crochet Hair Scarf

Low Ponytail

  1. Gather your hair into a low ponytail.
  2. Place the scarf around the base of the ponytail.
  3. Let both ends fall evenly.
  4. Tie the ends in a soft knot or bow.
  5. Adjust the scarf without pulling the crochet fabric too tightly.

Messy Bun

  1. Make a low or medium messy bun.
  2. Wrap the scarf around the base of the bun.
  3. Cross the two ends once.
  4. Tie them underneath or at the side.
  5. Gently arrange the ends for a relaxed handmade look.

Headband Style

Wrap the scarf over the crown of your head and tie the two ends at the nape of your neck. This creates a soft vintage-inspired headband style.

Color Ideas

  • Natural oatmeal with a dark brown border
  • Sage green with a cream border
  • Terracotta with a blush pink border
  • Black with a muted gold border
  • Denim blue with an ivory border
  • One solid color for a minimalist look

Helpful Tips

Why does my scarf twist?

Check that you are placing the first double crochet into the correct stitch of every row. Also avoid pulling the turning chain too tightly.

Why are my edges uneven?

Count the stitches at the end of every row. The first and last stitch are the most important stitches to check.

Can I change the length?

Yes. Change the length by making a longer or shorter foundation chain before beginning Row 1.

Can I change the width?

Yes. Add more rows to make the scarf wider. Stop earlier if you prefer a narrow hair ribbon.

Care Instructions

Hand wash the scarf in cool water with a mild detergent. Press it gently between towels to remove excess water. Reshape it and leave it flat to dry.
