24 Free Crochet Baby Dress Patterns

Twenty-four free crochet baby dress patterns, every one of them opened and read before it went on this page. For each dress you get the sizes the designer actually wrote, the yarn weight, the hook, and the skill level, so you can pick in thirty seconds instead of clicking through twenty tabs.

How this list was checked

  • All 24 load, and all 24 lead to the pattern itself, not to a shop or a homepage.
  • Every pattern is free and written out. Video-only tutorials were left off, because you cannot count stitches from a video while your hands are busy.
  • Sizes, yarn weight and hook size are copied from the designer’s own page. Where a designer did not state a number, the table says so instead of guessing.
  • Patterns sized only for toddlers and older children were left off, even when the title said baby.

The quick pick table

Sort by what you have. If you already own worsted yarn and a 5 mm hook, start with rows 1, 8, 10, 11 and 22.

What chest size each age needs

These are not averages pulled from a size chart. Each number below is the fit the designers themselves printed on the pattern pages linked on this page.

AgeChest the pattern fitsPatterns that state this
0-3 months16 in / 40 cmCrochet 'n' Create V-Shell, Just Crochet Cotton Dress, Candy Corn Dress
6 months17 in / 43 cmBernat Baby Dress on Yarnspirations, Spring Party Girl Dress
3-6 months17 in / 43 cm finishedDaisy Summer Dress sizing table

Finished chest is not body chest. A dress made to a 16 inch finished chest fits a baby whose chest measures less than that. The gap is called ease, and on a baby dress it is usually 1 to 2 inches. If you measure the baby at 16 inches and crochet to 16 inches, the dress will not go over the shoulders.

Newborn and 0-3 months

Eight patterns. These are the fastest to finish, and the most forgiving, because a newborn dress is small enough that half a stitch of gauge error does not cost you a whole size.

1. Simply Spring Baby Dress

Designed by Winding Road Crochet

  • Sizes Newborn to 6 months
  • Yarn Worsted (4)
  • Hook 5 mm (H)
  • Skill Beginner
  • Construction Top down, one piece

Worsted on a 5 mm hook is the fastest route to a finished dress. The fabric is thicker than DK, so it holds its shape on a newborn instead of collapsing.

2. Woodland Baby Dress

Designed by Crochet 'n' Create

  • Sizes Newborn
  • Yarn Stylecraft Special DK
  • Hook 4 mm and 4.5 mm
  • Skill Beginner
  • Construction Yoke first, skirt in rounds

Two hook sizes: the smaller one for the yoke, the larger for the skirt. That single change is what gives the skirt its flare without any extra increases.

3. Angel Wings Pinafore

Designed by Bev's Country Cottage

  • Sizes Newborn to 3 months
  • Yarn Sport (3)
  • Hook 5 mm (H)
  • Skill Beginner
  • Construction Flat, open back

Gauge is stated as 7 stitches to 2 inches. A sport yarn on a 5 mm hook gives a loose, airy fabric, which is the point for a pinafore worn over a bodysuit.

4. Caron x Pantone Newborn Dress

Designed by Olga Poltava

  • Sizes Newborn
  • Yarn 1 braid of Caron x Pantone
  • Hook 6 mm (J)
  • Skill Beginner
  • Construction Top down

The designer times it at one hour. Gauge is given as 3 dc per inch. This is the pattern to pick when the baby shower is tomorrow.

5. Crochet V-Shell Baby Dress

Designed by Crochet 'n' Create

  • Sizes 0-3 months, 16 in chest
  • Yarn King Cole Big Value Baby DK
  • Hook 4 mm and 4.5 mm
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Yoke first, shell skirt

Around 150 g of DK for the main colour. The v-shell repeat is written out row by row, so you can count the skirt without watching anything.

6. Cute Baby Dress

Designed by Patterns for Crochet

  • Sizes 0-3 months, 16 in chest
  • Yarn King Cole Big Value Baby DK
  • Hook 4 mm and 4.5 mm

Two colours, 100 g of each. Written in US terms on the page linked here, with a UK terms version on the same site if you need it.

7. Cotton Dress and Bonnet Set

Designed by Just Crochet

  • Sizes 0-3 months, 16 in chest
  • Yarn Sport weight cotton
  • Hook 4 mm
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Dress plus matching bonnet

Cotton instead of acrylic. It is heavier and less stretchy, so check your gauge before the yoke, not after the skirt.

8. Candy Corn Dress

Designed by Ball Hank n' Skein

  • Sizes 0-3 months, 16 in chest
  • Yarn Worsted (4), 3 skeins
  • Hook 5.5 mm (I)
  • Skill Beginner
  • Construction Striped, worked in rounds

Gauge is 15 hdc and 13 rows to 4 inches. Three flat colour blocks, no colourwork technique to learn, just change yarn at the start of a round.

3 to 12 months

Eight patterns. This is the range babies stay in longest, and the range most often gifted, because the dress still fits by the time the parcel arrives.

9. Starting Out Baby Dress

Designed by Marianna's Lazy Daisy Days

  • Sizes 6 months
  • Yarn DK (8 ply), about 100 g
  • Hook 4 mm
  • Skill Beginner
  • Construction Flat yoke, chain 65 start

One 100 g ball of DK acrylic finishes the whole dress. The pattern opens on a chain of 65 and every row is counted.

10. Lil Slice of Sweetness Dress

Designed by Crochet Supernova

  • Sizes 3-6 months
  • Yarn Worsted (4), four colours
  • Hook 5 mm (H) and 6 mm (J)
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Bodice then skirt

The bodice uses the smaller hook and the skirt the larger one. The designer notes you can lengthen the skirt for a bigger baby without redoing the yoke.

11. Butterfly Kisses Dress

Designed by Pattern Paradise

  • Sizes 3-6 months, 6-12 months
  • Yarn Worsted (4)
  • Hook 5.5 mm (I)
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Yoke with two buttons

Gauge is 15 hdc and 8 rows to 4 inches. Two 5/8 inch buttons close the back, which is the easiest closure to adjust if the chest comes out tight.

  • Yarn Stylecraft Special DK

14. Savannah Sundress

Designed by Theresa Knapp on Ravelry

  • Sizes 0-3, 6, 12, 18 months
  • Yarn DK cotton or cotton blend
  • Hook 3.5 mm (E) and 4 mm (G)
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Sundress, wide straps

400 to 600 yards depending on size. Cotton holds the strap shape where acrylic stretches, which matters on a sundress with no sleeves.

15. Little Miss Allison's Dress

Designed by Theresa Knapp on Ravelry

  • Sizes 0-6 months, 12 months
  • Yarn DK cotton
  • Hook 3.5 mm (E)
  • Skill Intermediate
  • Construction Striped, buttoned back

A small hook for DK, so the fabric comes out dense and the stripes stay crisp. 450 to 600 yards. Rated intermediate by the designer.

Designed by Yarnspirations

  • Sizes 6, 12, 18 months
  • Yarn Bernat worsted
  • Hook 4 mm (G)
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Classic yoke

The page states the fit as a 17 inch chest at 6 months. Yarnspirations patterns come as a free PDF you can print, which not every free pattern does.

Eight patterns written in three sizes or more. Make the small one now, make the same dress again next year without learning anything new.

17. Ruffle Yoke Baby Dress

Designed by Yarnspirations

  • Sizes 6, 12, 18 months
  • Yarn Bernat worsted
  • Hook 4 mm (G)
  • Skill Intermediate
  • Construction Broomstick lace yoke

This one needs a 15 mm knitting needle as well as the hook, for the broomstick lace. Read that line before you buy yarn, it catches people out.

18. Chevron Chic Baby Dress

Designed by Yarnspirations

  • Sizes 3 to 24 months
  • Yarn Red Heart worsted
  • Hook 6 mm (J)
  • Skill Advanced beginner
  • Construction Circular chevron

A 6 mm hook on worsted gives an open, fast fabric. The chevron is worked in the round, so there is no seam to line up.

19. Spring Party Girl Dress

Designed by CrochetKim

  • Sizes 6, 9, 12, 18, 24 months
  • Yarn Sport (2)
  • Hook 3.5 mm
  • Skill Intermediate
  • Construction Fitted bodice, full skirt

Chest fit is stated size by size, starting at 17 inches for 6 months. Sport yarn on a 3.5 mm hook is slow, and it is why this one looks shop bought.

Getting the size right

Mustard granny square crochet baby dress, showing stitch definition used to check gauge

Most baby dresses come out wrong for one reason: the yoke was started before the gauge was checked. The yoke sets the chest, and the chest is the only measurement that cannot be fixed afterwards. The skirt length can always be adjusted, the sleeves can be edged shorter, the chest cannot.

Work a swatch in the stitch the pattern uses, at least 10 cm square. Count how many stitches fill 1 inch. If you have never worked a swatch before, the step by step is in our beginner crochet guide. Then:

stitches per inch x target chest in inches = the stitch count your yoke must reach

Example with real numbers. Your swatch gives 4.5 stitches per inch. The dress needs a 17 inch finished chest. 4.5 x 17 = 76.5, so the yoke must reach 76 or 77 stitches before you split for the sleeves. If the pattern says 72 and your swatch says you need 77, you are crocheting too tight. Go up one hook size and swatch again.

This takes twenty minutes. Frogging a finished yoke takes an evening.

Most of the top down dresses here open on a flat circle at the neckline. If that is new to you, read how to crochet a magic ring and a flat circle first, because an uneven first round shows on every row that follows.

Which yarn weight to pick

Blush and cream crochet baby dress showing the drape of DK weight yarn
WeightUsual hook hereWhat it does on a baby dress
Sport (2)3 to 3.5 mmSlowest, finest, and the reason a handmade dress can look shop bought. Used by the Spring Party Girl Dress and the Angel Wings Pinafore.
DK (3)3.5 to 4.5 mmThe standard for baby clothes. Enough drape for a skirt, enough body to hold a yoke. Most of this list sits here.
Worsted (4)5 to 6 mmFastest. Thicker fabric, so it suits autumn and winter dresses and newborn sizes that would otherwise be too floppy.

Cotton and acrylic behave differently at the same weight. Cotton is heavier and does not spring back, so a cotton skirt hangs straighter and a cotton yoke stretches out over the day. Acrylic recovers its shape but can go limp on a wide skirt. For a sundress with straps, cotton. For a winter dress with sleeves, acrylic or a blend. Lace skirts are the exception: they need a yarn that holds an open stitch, which is covered in our guide to crochet lace.

Five mistakes that ruin a baby dress

Terracotta striped crochet baby dress with a plain bodice and even hem

1. Starting the skirt before checking the yoke on the baby. The yoke takes an hour. The skirt takes four. Check the chest at the split, not at the hem.

2. A neckline with no opening. A baby’s head is large relative to the chest. If the pattern has no button band and no back opening, the neckline has to stretch, and a crocheted neckline that stretches once stays stretched.

3. Buttons sewn on with yarn. Yarn pulls through the knit over time and a loose button on a baby garment is a choking hazard. Use sewing thread doubled, and sew through to a small backing button on the inside.

4. Skipping blocking. A blocked skirt hangs. An unblocked skirt curls at the hem and the photos look homemade in the bad way. Pin it damp, flat, let it dry fully.

5. Fringe, ribbon or ties longer than 6 inches. Keep any loose length short on anything a baby wears unsupervised.

6. Cuffs and hems worked in plain single crochet. A plain edge has no stretch, so the cuff fights the hand going through it. Worked in half double crochet through the back loop the same edge pulls in and springs back.

30 finished dresses to copy

If you are still deciding on a shape rather than a pattern, this five minute lookbook runs through 30 baby dress designs with a note on how each skirt is built. The images in it are illustrations, not finished objects for sale.

There is a longer written walkthrough of the same 30 shapes, including yoke construction and skirt stitch choices, in our crochet baby dress ideas guide.

Questions people ask

How much yarn does a baby dress take? Between 100 g and 200 g for sizes up to 12 months, on the patterns listed here. The Starting Out dress finishes on one 100 g ball of DK. The V-Shell uses around 150 g. Larger sizes and cotton both push it higher.

How long does one take? A newborn dress in worsted on a 5 mm hook is an evening. The Caron x Pantone dress is written as a one hour make. A sport weight dress on a 3.5 mm hook in a 12 month size is closer to three or four evenings.

Which one should a beginner start with? Pick one worked top down in one piece, with no seaming. The Simply Spring dress and the Autumn Lovin’ dress are both built that way. Both lean on single crochet, so there is almost nothing new to learn. Avoid the Ruffle Yoke dress first time out, it needs a 15 mm knitting needle for broomstick lace.

Can I sell what I make from these? That depends on each designer, and every page linked here states its own terms. Several allow selling finished items with credit. None of them allow republishing the pattern text. If selling is the plan, we compared the options in 10 best places to sell your crochet patterns.

Why are some patterns on Ravelry and some on blogs? Ravelry hosts the pattern database, but the instructions may live on the designer’s own site. Both links here go straight to where the free instructions are.

Where to start tonight

Pick one pattern from the newborn group, make a 10 cm swatch in the stitch it uses, and count your stitches per inch. That number decides every size decision that follows, and it is the only part of a baby dress you cannot undo later.
