10 Free Crochet Halloween Patterns You Can Finish This Weekend

Every October I tell myself I will crochet one little ghost. Then I look up and there are eleven of them on the windowsill. If that sounds familiar, or if you want it to, this list is for you.

I went through dozens of free Halloween crochet patterns and kept the ten clearest ones. Every single one has a full video tutorial, so you can follow along stitch by stitch instead of squinting at a written pattern. Most of them are no-sew, and almost all of them are finished in under two hours.

What you will need for almost all of these
Worsted weight yarn (4) in white, orange and black · 3.5 mm or 4 mm hook · safety eyes (9–10 mm) · polyester stuffing · a yarn needle. That is genuinely it.

New to amigurumi? Start with my ultimate beginner’s guide to crochet, and make sure you are comfortable with the magic ring, nine of the ten patterns below start with one.

10 Free Crochet Halloween Patterns

1. Classic Halloween Pumpkin

Designer: Mariska Vos, DIY Fluffies · Beginner · 1–2 hours · Watch on YouTube ↗

If you only make one thing from this list, make this. It is a simple increase-to-48, straight-sides, decrease-back-down shape, which means you are really just practising your single crochet for an hour. The segments come from wrapping yarn around the finished ball at the end, that step looks intimidating in photos and takes about four minutes in reality.

2. Fab-Boo-Lous No-Sew Ghost

Designer: The Loopy Lamb · Easy · no sewing at all · Watch on YouTube ↗

The arms are the clever part: they are chain-4 loops worked mid-round and then skipped on the next round, so they pop out on their own. No limbs to attach, no lumpy joins. The designer uses a 3.5 mm hook with worsted weight and 10 mm safety eyes, and a little pumpkin hat is included in the same pattern.

3. Quick Ghost Amigurumi

Designer: Nicole Chase · Beginner-friendly · Watch on YouTube ↗

A rounder, chubbier ghost than the one above, and the tutorial is unusually calm, she does not skip the awkward bits. This is the one I would hand to someone making their very first amigurumi, because the shape is forgiving: uneven tension just makes it look squishier.

4. Kawaii Ghost in a Witch Hat

Designer: Faith.Wisest · Beginner · Watch on YouTube ↗

Same base idea, but the witch hat changes the whole character, and it is the detail that makes people stop scrolling. Worth making as a set of three with the two ghosts above: one plain, one with a pumpkin hat, one with a witch hat. They look far more impressive as a trio on a shelf than any of them does alone.

5. Mini No-Sew Ghost

Designer: Rose and Lily Amigurumi · Easy · 4.5 mm hook · Watch on YouTube ↗

This one uses a bobble stitch for the little raised hands, eleven loops pulled through at once, which sounds alarming and is actually the most satisfying part of the pattern. The written version is on her blog alongside the video, so you can keep the pattern open on your phone and the video on a laptop.

Note: the designer points out that safety eyes are not recommended if this is going to a small child. Embroider them instead.

6. Bat Plushie

Designer: crochetmezaddy · Beginner · step by step · Watch on YouTube ↗

One of the most-watched free bat tutorials on YouTube, and deservedly so. The wings are worked flat in rows and sewn on at the end, that is the only sewing in the whole project, and it is two seams. If you want the wings to curl around the body Dracula-style rather than stick out, stuff the body a little more firmly than feels right.

7. Mini Bat for Keychains

Designer: Mariska Vos, DIY Fluffies · Beginner · 2.5 mm hook, cotton · Watch on YouTube ↗

A much smaller bat, worked in sport weight cotton on a 2.5 mm hook, which makes it exactly the right size to turn into a keychain or a bag charm. If you have made my mini keychain pattern, this is the same scale, add a lobster clasp through the top of the head and you are done.

8. Black Cat Amigurumi

Designer: AmareeLis · Step by step · works year-round · Watch on YouTube ↗

The one on this list that is not really seasonal, make it in black for October, in ginger or grey for the rest of the year, and it stops being a Halloween decoration and becomes a gift. A practical tip for black yarn: work under a bright lamp, or use a dark tweed rather than flat black. Counting stitches in solid black at night is genuinely miserable.

9. Candy Corn

Designer: Rose and Lily Amigurumi · Beginner · no sewing · Watch on YouTube ↗

Three colour changes and you are finished, probably the fastest project here. Because it works up in under half an hour, this is the pattern to make in a batch of six and string into a garland. Carry the unused colours up the inside instead of cutting and rejoining; with only three stripes the floats are short enough that nothing shows.

10. Little Spider

Designer: Lovable Loops by Melissa Hassler · Beginner · Watch on YouTube ↗

Eight legs sounds like eight times the work. It is not, they are simple chains worked directly into the body, so there is no stuffing and no sewing per leg. Make it in pastel pink or lilac instead of black and it turns from creepy into something a child will actually want to hold.

Frequently asked questions

What yarn is best for Halloween amigurumi?

Worsted weight (4) acrylic or a cotton-acrylic blend. Acrylic is cheap, comes in every Halloween colour, and hides uneven tension. Save the velvet and chenille yarns for later, they are lovely to touch and genuinely difficult to count stitches in.

How long does a small amigurumi take?

The candy corn is about 30 minutes. The ghosts and the mini bat are roughly an hour. The pumpkin and the black cat are closer to two. If you are brand new, double those numbers and do not let it bother you, everyone is slow at first.

Can a complete beginner make these?

Yes, if you can do three things: a magic ring, a single crochet, and an increase and decrease. That is the entire skill set for nine of these ten patterns. My beginner’s guide covers all of it.

Are safety eyes safe for children?

Not for children under three, safety eyes can be pulled out of stuffed toys. Embroider the eyes with black yarn instead. It takes two extra minutes and it also gives a softer, more handmade look.
